Oil Supply Chain

The petroleum industry is a very complex value chain. The value chain is typically broken into three major components:
  • Upstream
  • Midstream
  • Downstream
The upstream portion of the industry is the group that deals with finding and extracting the oil & gas from the Earth.
The midstream portion of the industry is the group that deals with the transportation of the oil & gas. This can be with trucks, pipelines, trains, and marine vessels.
The downstream portion of the industry is the group that deals with turning crude hydrocarbons into useful products for consumers.

When you hear the words "petroleum engineering" this typically refers to the upstream portion of the value chain.

Components of the Upstream Oil & Gas Industry

Oil & Natural Gas are produced both onshore and offshore. Onshore means the well is located on a continent, and offshore means the well is located somewhere in the ocean.

There are many different jobs involved in finding and producing these hydrocarbons. We will focus only on the technical job roles here.
